January 22, 2026, Boston, MA: Lucidity, the world’s only multi-cloud storage management company, today announced the public availability of the idle disk module in Lumen. First launched in June 2025, Lumen is the visibility, recommendations, and actions engine for managing cloud storage, helping enterprises simplify and optimize their cloud storage management and application performance wherever inefficiencies are hiding. Following the release of the disk tiering module this past June, these new capabilities in Lumen enable the detection of four types of idle disks, identify how long they’ve been idle and the corresponding cost impact, and recommend clean up actions, helping organizations uncover more wasted storage spend than they’ve ever seen before and giving them the context needed to act on cleaning it up.
To support dynamic application environments, disks are constantly being spun up and down, attached and unattached, reserved and brought back. Modern environments require this agility, but the downside is that it’s all-too-easy to lose track of storage resources that are no longer being used, but are still eating up significant cloud budget.
“Everyone knows that idle disks are a major source of waste on cloud storage bills,” says Nitin Bhadauria, Cofounder at Lucidity. “But in modern environments, there are so many kinds of idle disks that have been overlooked, and with dynamic applications, it can be hard to know if it’s safe to actually clean up the ones you do find. As a result, many idle disks are overlooked or ignored. Lumen changes that, bringing together visibility into four types of idle disks with all the context needed to prioritize cleanup efforts in one place.”
In modern cloud environments, idle disks come in four important types: unattached disks, reserved disks, disks that have no I/O, and unmounted disks. Each of these represent a storage resource that is costing money, but is providing no value. Cloud provider portals are able to show users the first type (unattached disks), but not the other three types. And since environments are dynamic, a point-in-time snapshot of idle disks doesn’t tell you enough to understand the cost impact, or determine which resources need to be cleaned up and which are serving an important function. As a result, IT and DevOps teams can struggle with prioritizing which idle disks are worth chasing down to clean up, leaving them to sit dormant and drain cloud budgets.
The idle disk module in Lumen identifies all four of these types of idle disks throughout the cloud environment, and shows users the cost impact of each idle disk, and how long the disk has been in a dormant state. This unprecedented level of visibility and context gives IT, cloud, and DevOps teams insights into idle disks they would not have been aware of otherwise, as well as the confidence to know which disks can be cleaned up without impacting operations. This leads to major cost savings for enterprises across industries.
Lumen helps enterprises around the world continue their efforts in reducing wasted cloud storage spend, optimizing application performance, and reclaiming hundreds of IT and DevOps hours. The idle disk module in Lumen continues this mission by delivering the following capabilities:
